[FAQ] DoGA

Q. What is DoGA?
A. DoGA is a free (?) piece of software that one can use to render things in 3D. It isn't run of the mill stuff like Maya or Lightwave though. DoGA works on a part-set based system that allows the user to assemble the parts in whatever order they please; think of it as like electronic Legos. It is very easy to use, and one can make models far faster than might otherwise be possible with other programs. What is best about it is that it is also quite customizable - custom textures can be easily added, as well as custom parts (although this tends to be far more tricky). As well, one can easily throw together a random assembly of parts and get a decent model, but with enought time and energy one can manipulate more basic parts, and pay more attention to detail and make models which are nearly commercial grade.

Q. Where can I get DoGA?
A. DoGA at least seems to be freeware. On the site (which is somewhat questionably translated English-from-Japanese), there is a lot of talk about registration and paying money, but it appears that this only unlocks certain higher functions which are lesser used.
At any rate, there are download sites here:
•Main Site
•My Mirror

Q. Help! My DoGA appears to be crashing/and/or a model load is resulting in a crash! What do I do?
A. It's a little harsh but the only sentiment that can be offered is that one gets what they pay for. Overall, DoGA is a solid piece of software - I myself have had a HD begin to die, and backed up the raw program files to an iPod, then after getting a new HD and reinstalling DoGA managed to simply overwrite the new install with the prior files and have it work fine. However, it is prone to mysterious and often inexplicable problems. Generally, don't leave it open with a model into a standby or hibernation state, and be very careful when adding custom textures. If you need to get rid of one to make room for another, be sure to remove the custom texture from whatever model used it first. Re-install if there is no other way to be found to fix it.

Q. Where can I post my renders?
A. There is a thread in General for that here. Also, don't feel afraid to post your abortive failures either in here.

Q. Where can I host my renders/how do I get my renders on the internets?
A. There are a number of free image hosting services out there. Photobucket and ImageShack are two possibilities. You could also try googling for more, or better yet, visit a Fark photoshop thread. Other than being pretty funny, Farkers need hosts with good capacity for bandwidth and large image size allowances and are generally quite good at sniffing down good free hosts.

Q. Where do I get more parts?
A. This is all part of the deeper mysteries of DoGA. Once again, you are on your own. Google is always your friend for such endeavors. If you are unwilling to do that, then check Firefury Amahira's DoGA faq (which was totally not ripped off herein). Bear in mind, though, that DoGA is as close to an arcane art as we'll ever probably see. As such, things that by all rights should work might not, and vice versa.

I tried it. Gave me a bloody headache.

I need to learn GMAX. That's free too, but it's a lot higher quality... it's the kind of thing you use to animate game models... i don't know how easy it is to use as a modeller though...
