hay d00dz, what's a legitimate shielding tech with a reasonable science fiction (as opposed to handwavium fantasy-in-space) explanation to allow shields to protect a ship from kinetics as well as energy weapons?

Whipple shield, Electromagnetic Reactive Armor and Cold Plasma Shielding

This is what I use, coupled with some complex, usually automated damage control procedures and additional redundancy (although I have yet to define how many redundant systems an A.C.S. has)

We use electro-magnetic based shields.
