So should I sacrifice opportunities in real life and most of my free time in a less-than-optimal entertainment for me just to appease people I haven't even met face-to-face and who I'll likely never, ever meet in my lifetime? Including some I would probably abhor meeting personally?

Of course not. I'm just saying that if you're going to bail, you can atleast spend a few minutes resolving the issues your departure would create for others, as well as, ya know, telling them you're leaving, so they aren't left hanging for days/weeks/months, wondering when you're going to post or what happened to you. And if you're liable to do this, you should probably avoid becoming a pivotal actor in major RPs anyway.

It's only cleaning up after yourself, and something I'd frankly consider simple common courtesy.
