If you're going to look at alternate history stuff by Harry Turtledove, you should read his alternate Civil War saga. Starting with "How Few Remain" it charts out what I presume to be the Spanish-American War (Although it becomes the Second Civil War) and then goes on to encompass World War One, the Interwar Years and World War Two.

He uses an interesting mix of real and fictional characters to weave what I believe to be an excelent story based on the what if question of the South winning the Civil War.

I've found a gold mine from seeing a link in that video.
Ignore the harmless Aliens, hunt the ones that can be eaten, shoot the dangerous ones and annihilate the ones with inhuman intelligence equal to us! They cannot comprehend Communism and are by their very nature reactionary!

It's much better than that filth Freehold, but if you're looking for a good alien invasion novel, you want Niven and Pournelle's Footfall, which is awesome in a can. It features genuinely alien aliens who aren't braindead by writer fiat. They actually use orbital bombardment effectively, but it isn't just a walkover.

I was going to direct you toward CF's huge rant on the subject, but it seems you found it. Carry on.

Harry Turtle dove has always been one of my favorite authors. He wrote some excellent fantasy books as well, though I prefer his historical fictions.

Guide our souls to the Elysium Fields
Bear us home upon our shields
Lay coins across our brows and sound the bells
We're paying our fare on the river to Hell
And when our sons and mothers lay us upon the funeral pyre
Tell them we died Hellenic soldiers with our faces to the fire

The idea was just too good and never ever explored as far as I know so...

For a change, a FT Intro story which began already losing, and starting with 1940s tech:
