One is the necessary evil of FTL. (Which I sidestep by claiming it's not FTL at all, but kind of brush lightly over anyway.)
The other is the Field, which while important... is, I admit, quite skiffy.
I suppose using the same principles as the FTL drive, I could bullshit something that fits my desired effects and consequences that doesn't deviate from the rules too much.
... Mentioning Kanuck though, does tell me an unintended consequence I might run with.
