I have since watched the entirety of series one and two, and I conclude that both are good viewing, and needed for an understanding of later series. For example, if I hadn't watched these, I'd have no idea how the team met the Asgard, or who the Nox were.

TST - Did they ever meet the furlings? I only remember, jack and mayborune got trapped on the beach with the psycho weed, and tried to kill each other. But then, I may have missed it. If so, Were they furry?

No, they never met the furlings. Though the name does suggest furriness.
