...... Commander Paaak' Klawk's stealth fleet through passive sensors saw the battle continue to esscelate. Vewing the passive sensor display, her gracile sinewy frame detected irratic fluxations of various forms of energy that pulsed, ebbed and flowed predictably. As the battle drew on she realized her immediate plan had changed - it had too. The Imperiatus fleet, forming a circular formation neccesitated such a change in plan. Rather than utilizing the "shark" tactic - an old Sskiss favorite which involved attacking from below at an angle. Paaak' Klawk elected to attack from behind. A skilled commander had to be adaptive.....

....and patient....

The 48 vessels that made up her fleet excellerated only gradualy at first. By the time they had reached approximatly one light second from the Imperaitus fleet they were cruising at over 2700 gees per second. Paaak' Klawk order a further increase in excelleration...

"Prepare for battery/maximum power transfer to claws/teeth" She cackled, squawking crow-like as she strutted about the command chamber area fluffing her dull brown plumage for added effect. The remainding Sskiss bridge crew seemed to drool in anticipation of the attack. She took the time to pick at an itch and resumed viewing the passive sensor display. A human observer may have actually found the scene amusing.

By about a half light second distance from the enemy, Paaak' Klawk odered the release of 288 ECM/ECCM drones (the entire fleet compliment) and launched the first volley of plasma torpedoes. These were heavily armoured and shielded. The ECM/ECCM drones shadowed the plasma warheads. At this point they had reached approximatly 14,500 gees per second.

By around a quarter light second distance, the Sskiss commander ordered the dampner field dropped and quickly open fire on the rapidly approached enemy fleet. The Sskiss stealth fleet had now reached an excellaration of roughly 37,000 gees per second. The entire fleet now split into packs of six vessels each, forming eight such packs, each of which had choosen a separate target. Paaak' Klawk did not care if the targeted ships were destroyed on the first pass as long as they were suitably crippled and considerable chaos was had been sown. That was their primary task.

From deep space the dark omminous looking Sskiss vessels would have gradually appeared over a few scant seconds followed by an impressive display of firepower. Paaak' Klawk took a gamble and ordered all available battery power channeled into weapons fire. The Sskiss stealth fleet commander had another maneuver to perform that would hopefully reduce the need for any shielding, at least for a little while. A variety of pulses and beams issued forth from the Sskiss vessels at what would be very short range for any of them, even for the plasma mounts.

"Prepare energy leech pods for dispersal" She said with signaling greatest cunning....

From the rear of each "Deadly Prowler" stealth raider some 500 energy leech pods in cluster formations spewed out totalling some 24,000 and immediatly seeked targets among the enemy fleet....

Once this task was carried out with she gave her next crucial order....

"Dive, DIVE!!!".... She screeched.

From deep space the Sskiss stealth raiders abruptly dived as one with graceful corkscrew maneuvers heading towards the systems' southern pole leaving the Imperiatus fleet above them. The gravidic based monopole drives shifted generating a series of gravity beams steadily downward dropping each craft like a stone plunging downward like alien hawks. The entire attack took no more than several seconds, but in battle such can be an eternity, and more importantly, critical....

The Skeelzanian and Imperiatus fleets engaged almost simultaneously, filling the space between themselves with thousands of shots from hundreds of guns. Explosions blossomed across the super-armored hulls, the nanite Isotropic Coating diverting what energy they could into other directions of existence.

As the blinding radiation of the first salvo dissipated, the Skeelzanian fleet launched the retaliatory ordnance. Gauss-flung missiles rode antimatter suns directly at the Imperiatus fleet. The onboard computers had only the vaguest instructions from their erstwhile homes, and relied on internal guidance to steer them into enemy vessels. The Elven foe had to contend with hundreds of erratically behaving warheads, especially salted to spread blinding radiation across nearby sensors. Skeelzanian ordnance was especially disruptive, but lacked finesse. When the huge barrage began to detonate, it effectively masked the enemy from Skeelzanian sensos.

“Keep pinging the cloud, Van Cleef ordered over the reports of a gratifyingly large number of hits. “Find whatever poor bastard just got himself promoted, and destroy his ship!

“I think we have her, Lord. Teck highlighted an Imperiatus dreadnought on the display. “Minor concentration of enemy forces, focusing on this vessel.

“Amateurs. Give orders for First Division to target as one and fire.

The sixteen battlewagons, the Ishtars and the Migrations, zeroed in and fired. The unfortunate vessel’s shielding cracked, quickly followed by the hull. Escaping gasses ignited and burst as the dreadnought veered off position. The Imperiatus seemed unfazed.

“Humm. The Grand Admiral stroked his mustache. “Keep looking, Mister Teck. Someone is in command of that fleet now. Meanwhile, First Division is to continue working over their heavies.

Skeelzanian ordnance was erratic and cumbersome, more akin to exploding hammers thrown into a crowd than long knives tearing metallic flesh between the stars. Skeelzanian gunnery was much, much more focused.

By synchronizing and amplifying the power of their sensors, individual divisions had begun to target individual vessels. An Imperiatus vessel could find itself under fire from as many as a dozen cruisers, or the sixteen dreadnoughts of First Division. As casualties were absorbed, the Skeelzanian fleet would dynamically reorganize itself; weakened divisions would be absorbed by the stronger, recalibrate their tacnets, and continue the barrage.

Behind an ever-increasing cloud of missiles and torpedoes, and blazing away with a vengeance, the Skeelzanian wedge thundered on towards the Imperiatus ring. The greatest fear in Van Cleef’s mind, and that of every senior officer in the fleet, was that the Keeblers would decimate the Deep Space Fleet at a stroke with another of their ‘Super Torpedoes.’ It was assumed that the Imperiatus shared the typical Elven trait of immorality, and thus were presumed to be loathe to expend their lives needlessly. The Deep Space Fleet would penetrate and disrupt the enemy, ensuring that if they were to be targeted by a Super Torpedo, the enemy would lose just as many vessels. Leaving a wake of burning vessels and spreading wreckage clouds, preceded by a burning storm, the Deep Space Fleet charged the Imperiatus fleet.

On the ground, Imperiatus ground batteries, already long set up, began to track the rapid onset of the Sskiss vessels. They were still out of range of the guns, but from the ground even the "defenders" could see them coming. In anticipation, the guns began to glow.

Seeing the surprise entry of the Sskiss into Carvinia's atmosphere, Kertai rang up the light ships and fighter squadrons - it was time to break through to the surface, and assist the ground assault. From the main body of the fleet, hundreds of the Vanguard cruisers advanced, and turned their concerted firepower upon any Imperiatus vessel in their path, carving through the bottom center of their formation. Squadrons of fighters, from a distance thick as a cloud, or a swarm, followed in their wake, the heavier Valkyrie fighter-bombers jettisoning their heavy anti-ship payloads as they came upon the Imperiatus fleet and then rocketing forward to meet the cruisers. What it lacked in dramatic flare it made up in grim efficiency.

Alarm was growing within the guts of every Imperiatus commander, but with it, a cold sense of certainy about what would have to be done next. As Skeelzania's line crashed into their own, the commanders, one by one disappearing, called a conference. They had been outmaneuvered once more, for the moment, but they held power in reserve that could hardly be contested. Their own fleet would doubtlessly be maimed, but it would emerge victorious, and one more victory is all that they needed. The gloves were now off; these children would feel the bite of cold steel next.

Allanean Battlegroup

First, the fighters drop down towards the athmosphere, separating themselves into multiple layers. Lowest come the Anger class gunships, hugging the ground at low altitude. Above them, still in the athmoshpere, come Durandale transathsmopheric variable-geometry fighter-bombers and Andromeda electronic warfare craft. With them are hundreds of combat drones of numerous brand – about twenty drones per every manned craft. They spit out chaff and decoy as their front deploys – but they are not the most important. They get fired upon, of course – and the warships in orbit fire their heavy cannon at whatever fires at the fighters.

They speed in a wide front towards the enemy's military facilities. Behind them, the sky lights up as hundreds of thousands of objects pierce the atmosphere.

The Allaneans have elected not to use drop pods for their weaponry for this one. Rather, their troops and IFVs are equipped with gravchutes, braking their fall by manipulating the gravity well itself. And mixed among the troops are hundreds of man-sized dolls, roughly resembling a man in powered armor or a tank on a drop platform. Sometime, a weapons system gets it wrong and vaporises one of these pods and not an Allanean.

In the meanwhile, the combat aircraft approach the enemy positions. Orders are given – not words, but mere thought-impulses traveling from brain to brain. From thousands of bomb pylongs, guided missiles and cluster bombs detach, raking the enemy positions with hypervelocity kinetic kill weapons, incendiaries burning hot enough to melt through starship armor, and explosives that would have made Alfred Nobel cry like a little baby. Where the bombs do not suffice, ortillery fire is applied to heavier enemy bunker.

Behind the aircraft the Allanean combat vehicles are already roaring towards the battle, their steel tracks speeding forward at one and a half thousand furlongs per hour. Soon, the Allaneans will introduce their new friends, the Imperiatus, to the wonderful world of mechanized warfare.

And coming up behind the infantry, descending on armored ground-to-orbit cargo sleighs, are two Mark XXX Peaceful Engineering Units. They're going to be doing most of the teaching.

On board the command dreadnaught "Grasping Claws", Sshaar' Paak was summoned by fleet commander Ruuk' Khaw and ordered to report to the landing bay to receive his final orders and battle plans and of course to size up the troops under his command.

"Greatness to the Sskiss race!" Sshaar' Paak said with modifiers of 'resolve' and then signaling 'truth/hope'...

"Hunt/Feed well crechemate Sshaar' Paak - for if your hunt is successful you will be saciated/fed with rulership of "creche of worlds" (starsystem?) ." Ruuk' Khaw added with modifiers of 'certainty/truth'.

"Reward unnecessary crechmate!" Sshaar' Paak merely signaled 'selfless servitude'....

------------------------------------------------------------

Sshaar' Paak had reached one of the huge landing bay areas of the "Grasping Claws". All manner of small craft were present; Drones and fighter craft of various sorts, a couple of heavily armoured auxillary craft and the largest, six assault lander saucers which dominated the area. Each was a smooth, sleek thick chunky disk some 120 meters accross and roughly half that in height if the the cupola-like structure at the top was included. It was the top cupola like structure that contained most the weaponry; missile and torpedo launchers of various sorts. The underside of each the saucers contained more ground support anti-personal/vehical grade weaponry hidden in slots on each of the crafts' undersides. Each saucer could hold up to seven thousand troops and at least twelve Sskiss surface based war machines.

------------------------------------------------------------

After he boarded one of the assault landers and received his final orders view holoprojection, Sshaar' Paak weighed his tactical options. However, he knew a formidable obstacle awaited and needed to be bypassed before any ground action could begin. The area around the enemy position was defended by several ground batteries that would be able to target any invader who wished to land troops on the surface.

Normally, in such an operation as this, the Sskiss would simply launch thousands of spiky spore-like capsules each containing a Sskiss trooper. However, in this case the danger of such an approach would mean a large number of the spores would be destroyed before they could reach the ground. This was not an option the Sskiss - or their allies could afford. Instead, the Sskiss decided to utilize the newly constructed landing saucers for this critical task. Having studied the enemy as well as the Carvinia defences, the saucers were designed and constructed for just such a purpose. Heavily armoured, shielded and possessing a heavily reinforced hull they were the best that could be manufactured at this point. In short, the landing saucers would have to sustain enough damage to reach the surface. Sshaar' Paak hoped it would be enough for the ground troops and equally knew that the total ground effort could afford no losses before combat was finally joined.

A smallish red coloured Sskiss with marked darker bands greeting him in a welcoming/submissive posture. Sshaar' Paak signaled 'acknowlegdment' and spoke.

"All in state of readiness?"

"Yes dominent one, all is in readyness including 'pods of false spoor'.....

-------------------------------------------------------------

As the six saucers gently glided from the huge landing bay of the "Grasping Claws" they immediatly dropped from the bulk of the Sskiss fleet heading toward Carvinia below.

"False spoor pods released and activated" Keee' Awkk stated in a neutral tone.

From space, the six assualt landers were shadowed by various drones; offensive and defensive combat drones, ECM/ECCM drones and several drones rigged to pulse false energy signitures resembling those of the assualt landers. Sshaar' Paak and all those aboard hoped it would be enough to fool the Imperiatus gunners on the surface of Carvinia.....

Meanwhile within the central controll area within the lead lander, Sshaar' Paak viewed a bubble shaped monitor that indicated activity in the area around Carvinia. The Alleanians and the forces of Ils' Sorne had launched fighters and other small craft to attack the ground based installations below. This is what Sshaar' Paak had hoped would happen and he knew it would provide an excellent distraction.

However, as they approached the planet, beams started to lance out into space in the direction of the assault landers....

"Evasive!" Sskaar' Paak stated with modifiers of 'calmness'. Sshaar' Paak could not afford to fail..... every decision he made determined the fate of not only he and the 42,000 Sskiss under his command, but perhaps, the fate of the ESUS as well....

As the lander saucers neared the planet the intensity of the attack increased somewhat. The assault landers bobbed and weaved, dipped and zig zagged to avoid being hit. Maximum power was shunted to the shields and the small Sskiss assault fleet made no move to join in the attack of the ground based batteries below as this action would have immediatly betrayed their identity.....

The Sskiss had no god, they were governed by two opposing realities; instinct and logic - neither could afford a god. The Sskiss as a race relied on blind chance coupled with these two realities within each of their minds....

“You have the go, Genlich. The Stars Belong To The Strong. Was the entirety of Fleet Captain Fendal’s communiqué to the Ravager General.

“Fuck yes they do, was all Markus Scarus said in reply before launching into action. The plan had been to let the more numerous Sskiss force break the initial iron curtain and, while the dinosaurian ground forces organized themselves, 10,000 Ravagers would land and immediately begin assaulting enemy positions. The Genlich himself would accompany a second wave of 20,000, and 5,000 would remain in orbit.

However, that was the immediate future and this was now.

“This is Scarus to first wave. It’s time, launch immediately and show me a veritable wall of fucking death the likes of which I’ve never seen! For Zerstorendar!

Several affirmatives, some more vigorous than others, echoed through his visor as the designated commanders of each landing ship sounded off. Seconds later, the already-prepared ships began hurtling towards the planet in the wake of the Sskiss’ landing force. On the tactical channels, lower ranking Ravagers traded banter in the traditional pre-landing competition: who could sound more eager to get to grips with the enemy. Scarus paid no attention to it as his communications AI filtered it out, more concerned with the logistics and facts of the landing, primarily ensuring that everybody was going to be landing in the vicinity of their target and were not overly vulnerable to enemy fire, but he inwardly smiled nonetheless. Back in the day indeed.

“Anyone who kills more of these fuckers than I do gets TEN mindfucks (slang for a powerful alcohol popular with Ravagers) on me!
“Prepare to be poor, motherfucker!
“No FUCK YOU!
“Real witty, fuckwit.
“Focus on the job, you fucking morons.
“I’M FUCKING HUGE!
“For fuck’s sakes stop screaming you, you-“
“Not when I rip your head off and-“
“I hear the Imperiatus are a bunch of sissies without their nanotech
“They’re a bunch of sissies WITH their nanotech!
“Big guns though
“They get blown in half just the same
“And we’ve all seen they don’t know the first thing about-“
“RIP AND TEAR
“Exactly!
“I’M HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE
“-…DOUBLE CLARETARD
“SAY THAT ONE MORE TIME AND I’LL RIP YOUR FUCKING-“
“FFFFFFFFF-“

To an outsider, it would appear that the Ravagers were not focused on the job and were not properly focusing their aggression. However, Zerstorendarian soldiers had over thousands of years elevated pre-action aggression focus to an art form, and in fact every single one of the Ravagers was supremely prepared for the chaos that would greet them when they landed. The aggression conditioning and hormonal enhancements of the Ravagers actively rewarded the supersoldiers for their pre-action outlet, and it was a matter of fact that this banter was, in many cases, performance enhancing.

Genlich Markus was forced to make slight changes to some of the landing ship approach vectors before they entered anti-orbital weapons ranges in order to avoid cluttering their own troops up with that of the Sskiss. Once he was satisfied they were all on target, he began preparations to launch the reinforcement wave, including himself, while keeping a close eye on the progress of the initial wave.

The initial wave, much like the Sskiss landing forces, was the one most in danger of taking heavy casualties from ground-based defences. Zanekrieger landing protocols suggested that under these circumstances, a wave of 10,000 or more be divided into landing units of 250 on the space-inefficient but massively overarmoured and overpowered Huegathor class Ravager landing craft. The officiald designation was in itself a nickname but the Huegathor's were still affectionately referred to as the “Oversized flying brick of justice, or in short the BJ.

Forty of these hurtled towards the planet, their purpose to absorb ludicrous amounts of firepower for a craft of their size and (reasonably?) safely deposit their cargo on the ground in absolutely any manner possible.

As ground-based weaponry lashed the craft, it became clear that the Justice Bricks were proof against sporadic attacks. Heavier weaponry caused serious damage to the hull of one Brick as it approached the atmosphere, and the Ravagers inside were launched towards the planet from the craft’s insides in single-man backup drop pods as the landing craft scuttled violently. The single Ravagers, annoyed at the difficulty this posed to their organization, accepted that the probability of their surviving encountering enemy forces upon landing had just dropped drastically. Which was okay with them, considering they got to fight first. Genlich Scarus, on the other hand, was ‘pissed right the fuck off’ but accepted that in war, men got killed. Still, he broadcast their position to the nearest landing forces and gave orders that their position be reinforced ASAP while feeding potential landing coordinates to the drop pods themselves. In all honesty, the loss of a single craft was less than expected.

As the Ravagers entered the atmosphere, it became apparent to the Imperiatus the sacrifice that was made for the inordinate defensive capabilities of the Huegathor class landing craft. The craft did not slow down to anywhere near a sensible speed when screaming red-hot through the atmosphere, the shields managing to contain the massive temperatures built up as they approached the ground. When they struck the ground, it was with the force of a thousand thunderbolts. A seismic wave of dirt, grass, or rock echoed across the groundscape for hundreds of metres as the massive landing craft arrived at their destinations with ludicrous force. The Ravagers inside the many craft were kept relatively safe by the mechanisms of their armour, but injuries were widespread and the nanite medsystems of their armour was already hard at work as they emerged from the one-use landing craft.

Huegathor class landing craft landed with such force that they required extensive repairs before being used again. Their inordinate size and armour in ratio to their carry capacity was not merely because of the amount of firepower they were expected to absorb, and the soldiers of the Zanekrieger secured their immediate positions from the midst of a significant impact crater.

The Zerstorendarians were now on Carvinia.

As the Hughie plunged into Carvinia's atmosphere, Captain Albert Bodhan only had its thin armor plating and a prayer between him and the Imperiatus triple-A on the ground. The squadron panel still showed all green, but as soon as they got in range of the guns, things began to change in a hurry. The radio chatter picked up as the deadly blue of the Imperiatus beam weaponry began to lance through the air.

"Evasive maneuvers, draw fire just long enough for allied landing vessels to get out of the line of fire!" Bodhan barked over the com.

The Hughies fired their engines and raced down toward the Imperiatus batteries, letting lose a salvo of bombs and ordnance. Their payloads were, however, for close air support, and not designed to crack a heavily fortified position, but it was a necessary distraction. Bodhan watched with clenched teeth as lights blinked and died out on the board.

"Circle back, keep up the fire! Sskiss forces coming down!"

As the landing saucers descended, one of the batteries turned its attention to the Sskiss vessels.

"Demmer Squadron, focus all fire on that battery at sector g-7!"

Hundreds of ships swarmed to take on the battery, one at a time being randomly plucked out of the sky and plummeting to the ground as another of the batteries concentrated on them took aim. The concentrated fire of the Hughies broke the shield, and began to lay into the armor itself. The battery refocused its attention.

"Allanean and Rendari landing vessels on the hoof! Hold fi-"

Bodhan never finished his sentence, as one of the beam batteries on the ground picked out his ship and fired. It ripped through the vessel like a sniper's bullet, turning it into a flame-burst and so much charred scrap. Command systems immediately re-associated COC.

"-atch it! Damn, Alpha just went out. This is Captain Eldoth Lendon! Maintain your flight until all allied forces have hit the ground!"

Like a swarm of gnats the Hughies continued to pepper the Imperiatus emplacements, which in turn, swatted them like flies. Their numbers were not infinite, however.

And the very Allanean formation breathed fire.

The fighters and combat drones spat forth a veritable hail of kinetic kill missiles and octocellulose bombs – both the regular kind, that set off powerful explosions whenever they hit a target, and cluster munitions, that rained out upon the foes of Allanea with hundreds of tiny guided bomblets that attracted themselves to the body heat of the enemies or to the energy output of their vehicles. Then, as the aircraft passed overhead, they engaged the enemy with their light Hellbores. Where the cannon hit, there would be a flash as bright as a small sun as a microscopic thermonuclear explosion went off at the impact point – no more than several hundred kilograms, but then these were automatic Hellbores.

Behind them, tanks and infantry fighting vehicles fired octocellulose shells when they could not see the enemy, and engaged him with beam weaponry and Hellbores when they came into horizon range. The Allanean troops did not even need to do that – they simply aimed their rifles in the vague direction of te enemy, selected their targets – usually a dozen or so from what forward sensor drones gave them – and pulled the triggers. They did not need to aim as they sprayed their rounds – because every single 7.62mm minimissile simply proceeded to its preset target.

And at the back of the formation were the Peaceful Engineering Units, and their time had finally come.

I tear across the battlefield at my full ground speed, my tracks leaving behind a trail of crushed rocks, trees turned into matchwood, and a new flat road good enough for groundcars to follow in my wake. I am satisfied with this – it will make a good basis for paving. But for now, my work is different.

Overhead, Imperiatus missiles streak skywards, striving to engage Allied forces still in orbit. I fire infinite repeaters, and three missiles blossom into fiery flowers overhead. I bask in the knowledge that I have probably saved the lives of Allied crewmen for only 0.01 of a second – for my work is not even close to being complete. There is still the matter of the enemy emplacement far, far ahead.

I fire ground-to-orbit missiles. Thirty kilometers away from me, my battle-brother does the same. We both know why. The missiles are designed to crack the shield and armor of enemy cruisers as they pound the planet I am parked on – but now they streak out, seeking the heavy enemy emplacements. Simultaneously with that, we engage our high-angle mortars, raining down shell after shell against the enemy installations' less protected sections – breaking sensors, destroying exposed weapons, cracking small bunkers like eggshells.

The two vehicles overtake the infantry with ease, the soldiers waving in greeting as the vehicles passed by. “Go, Bolo! Kick their ass! Bolo! Bolo!

I am annoyed. I am not a Bolo. I am a Peaceful Engineering Unit. Perhaps a better word would be... 'tractor'.

The Huegathor class vessels having landed, sections of the landing craft exploded open and the Zanekrieger forces poured out, smaller and more massive vehicles rolling and hovering out of the landing craters while the Ravagers leaped out like a swarm of red ants. Those further away from the first line of Imperiatus ground defences moved as quickly as possible to link up with the forward units, who immediately began the attack.

Moving on foot at incredible speeds, propelled by potent physical enhancements and their bulky ‘Thwarter’ suits, thousands of Ravagers scattered into units of fifty known as Digits, each with several attached vehicles including Main Battle Tanks. The MBT’s, being the second largest vehicle on the ground, also formed support units for the larger mobile fortresses. Highly mobile and potent mechanized artillery units took position around the Huegathor landing sites, as the damaged landing craft themselves became a sort of stationary defence after striking the ground. With massive amounts of air cover provided by other ESUS nations, the Zerstorendarians executed their ground war with no fear of a lack of support.

In space, Genlich Markus Scarus was already aboard his own Huegathor, and the command uplink in his combat visor kept him aware of the situation on the ground. Continuing to order deployments even as his landing vessel accelerated towards the planet and began to take fire, he ensured that his troops initiated the attack against a technologically superior, if cowardly, and well-entrenched foe. As his craft continued to hurtle at ludicrously unsafe speeds to the oddly beautiful Carvinia, wreathed in the flash and glow of a million different weapons, Scarus gave the final order that the Zanekrieger forces on the ground needed to unleash hell:

“Commence Operation: Molestation. Weapons free, sub-nuclear thresholds. For the Glorious Kaiserlich, you big manly fuckers! Immediately, Scarus heard the general reply of his man on the ground, Overlich (Colonel) Rayne Vandan:

“You heard the man in the sky, FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-“

It was a long battlecry, and Scarus blocked it out as he switched his focus to the status of the current wave. Vandan and his Ten thousand Ravagers were already on the ground, but the Scarus and his Twenty thousand were only minutes away.

+++++

Overlich Rayne Vandan, a man for whom higher command would never be a reality, was a line officer at heart and knew he would die as a line officer. Sometimes he wished further advancement was a possibility, but there were other times when he knew his frontline command was more valuable to him than anything else.

A heavy Imperiatus ray grazed several meters over his head, striking a tank on the frontal armour and causing an explosion that sent him and another Ravager flying about thirty feet into the already-ruined grass in front of him. His thought and reaction speed boosted by his armour’s combat AI, he rolled with the landing and leapt to the side to avoid another beam of deadly energy. The heavy Zanekrieger tank, engaged in self repair to a section of its armour but still able to fire, spoke with a deafening roar as its main cannon obliterated a section of the enemy fortress. Vandan and his Digit of Ravagers fired at Imperiatus soldiers who were pouring out from the enemy base, the massive power of their arm-mounted guns completely obliterating several of the soldiers but failing to completely overcome the powerful medical nanites and power armour of the group of the Aerian troopers. Return fire shredded three of his soldiers, two of which disappeared as their failsafe teleporters saved their lives and one continuing to fire from a prone position, his legs useless. Vandan ordered a tank to cover the man as the growing Zerstorendarian assault force threw everything it had at the resilient enemy.

Damn fucking straight, he was a line officer to the death.

The air was a mess of energy weapons, explosions, countermeasure-clouds and long-range heavy artillery as the Imperiatus fired at both Allanean atmosopheric fighters and the scattered Zerstorendarian assault force. The combined punishment that the Imperiatus defenders were taking was staggering, large blocks of resilient infantry and vehicles holding the outskirts of the enemy base while Ravagers and Zanekrieger tanks fired from countless directions. The Sskiss assault could be heard over the din, the bestial roaring of their massive reptilian beasts and hissing of their smaller assault troops forming an odd backdrop to the chaos. He hadn't seen them, but there were apparently a couple of fuckhuge Allanean supertanks around as well.

Another MBT was obliterated by the focused fire of the enemy heavy weaponry just as the Overlich received acknowledgment from his superior that the second wave was about to land. Taking a moment to survey the field, his advanced awareness allowing that to translate to an indeterminably small time, Vandan attached what he saw to the global status report constantly being fed to him. Casualties were in the hundreds even though the attack had only gone for several minutes, and while most of those Ravagers had been sent back into the fight through the emplaced teleporter beacons, and a number of vehicles had been ruined. Even one of the mobile fortresses, its hundreds of guns laying waste to vast swaths of enemy emplacements, was taking serious hull damage as its shields failed. The enemy fire was not thinning fast enough.

Another barrage of Rendari artillery annihilated an enemy gun battery as the artillery units targeted weapons most threatening to certain assets, in this case the damaged mobile fortress. Vandan allowed the moment of strategic consideration to end as his AI calculated that the enemy were attempting to bracket him and his constantly moving soldiers:

“196 Digit form Subalts and avoid!, the order conveyed not verbally but via an instant pulse message between the commander and his unit, as there was no time for him to voice it. His forty-something soldiers split into smaller units and scattered, the whole formation moving like water as they attempted to avoid being destroyed by concentrated enemy fire. Several of his men, fast and heavily armoured as they were, were struck repeatedly by the incredibly powerful raybeams and disappeared from the field in a flash, their massively damaged bodies now the duty of the highly advanced triage bases. While these teleportation failsafes were saving many lives that would otherwise be lost, it was possible the Imperiatus deployed technology to shut them down. At that point, deaths would increase.

Holding firm in the face of the enemy defences, the Zanekrieger continued to inflict massive damage on the enemy. Briefly wondering how the Sskiss were faring, Vandan charged towards a forward unit of enemy soldiers to engage them in close combat as informed heavy weaponry units covered them. His section of the increasingly barren and burning field was only the smallest part of the overall siege, but he swore by Tereza and the Kaiserlich that he would fight at least as hard as he expected of his own men so that his force would crack open the enemy defences and crush their puny skulls afoot.

Soon, hopefully. The battle was only getting bloodier.

....The beams abruptly ceased. Sshaar' Paak studying the passive 3D scanner display saw the reason.
Again, pulses of energy appeared abruptly, ebbed and died and with it ships and crew....

"Cease evasive/increase rate of velocity" Sshaar' Paak ordered once again with modifiers of 'calmness'. He felt a need to reassure the crew of his own abilities as tension was high among crew and troops alike. A greater difficulty laid waiting on the surface below. The assault landers entered the atmosphere of the world below without incident, glowed briefly upon entry and finally began a landing sequence and then followed by a troop deployment. Data on the planet flooded in, was analyzed and recommendations suggested. Sshaar' Paak listened and found that Carvinia's environment was within tolerable parameters for his species except for one detail. At a mere 20% composition of the atmosphere, the oxygen content was too low - barely enough to support his kind on the surface unaided. The Sskiss inhabited worlds where the oxygen content of the atmosphere was least 28% and in some cases as high 35%. This reality could not be changed, the Sskiss had to adapt to the current situation with their own technology; Oxygen tablets and tanks were ordered in use, removed from storage....

But one reality had changed - The Sskiss had arrived on Carvinia....

There was a moment of terrible silence, and then, as if by some unseen cue the Sskiss as a body poured forth from their trench-like shelters like blood from a deep wound. They spilled across the land, intent and focused in purpose like an army of ants. They as a whole were primed to kill only - not to eat, as this would have reduced battle efficiency. And while other species fought for glory or honor, the Sskiss fought with all the cold methodical efficiency of a task that needed completion.
As the largest broke into a lumbering run, the heavy thuds and footfalls of the larger Sskiss forms could be heard at a great distance. A low rumble at first, growing louder and more ominous with each passing moment. The great thundering sound could be heard from several hundred meters away. Clouds of dust partly obscured their forms and the hulking black armoured troops could barely be glimpsed in the distance. The smaller Sskiss forms, moving rapidly in erratic zig zag fashion either trailed the larger forms, or took up position directly under the floating Sskiss war machines for added protection. Their terrible piercing screeches could be heard through the din. Suddenly, as if commanded by some unheard order or some unseen force, beams and pulses of varying hues erupted forth in crackling sounds from the nozzles of their alien weaponry illuminated the scene. In the larger forms, such weaponry seemed blended, almost melded into their armour, while the smaller forms clutched weapons in three thick long fingers. Strange probes, Sskiss space craft in miniature, darted ahead seeking out targets. The sleek menacing arched triangular craft floating just several tens of meters above fired from the cobra head shaped structure a terrible fiery orange plasma beam that incinerated all that it struck. Occasionally, it rotated at the base of its central stalk from side to side spreading the death further....

Shortly thereafter, sickly green pulses emanated from each wingtip of the Sskiss war machines were seen to be fired, these disintegrated all targets struck - they glowed briefly, showing their internal skeletons and then vanished, while vehicles and other objects struck simply turned red, then green becoming increasingly less distinct in outline and form and then these too vanished....
