Attention all personnel. Set Condition Black throughout the fleet. Prepare for combat.

Across the Allanean fleet, the last preparations for battle were being made, even as the ships transited through hyperdrive.

Allaneans, within hours we will be engaging the Imperiatus on our own terms. Remember: this is our Galaxy. It belongs to the ESUS and no one else. This is the Galaxy of the people who fought the Shivans and crushed them, who fought the Federation and brought it down, who fought the toughest, most hardened troops imaginable – and we defeated them

Beam weapons and kinetic cannon were prepared, missiles armed, fighters moved to their launch bays. All was ready.

Allaneans, within fifty-five minutes we will enter realspace in the Carvinia system. Prepare for combat.

“Gentlemen, the Kaiserin!

The guests raised their glasses and echoed the Grand Admiral. Twenty-four hours remained before JT, Jump Time. The Deep Space Fleet had already shifted into its battle formation, poised to hammer the Imperiatus fleet with every weapon available. Gerulf was confident that when battle was joined, the Sternmarine would pitch the shattering spear into the heart of the enemy. So confident, in fact, that he had invited the captains of the Ostrogoth, her sister Burgundian, and half of the Heavy Squadron to dinner. Rear Admiral Desaix could unfortunately not attend; not every precaution could be flaunted.

After downing the final toast, the Skeelzanian officers filed out. They were in the proper spirits for those about to lead thousands of men in a desperate gambit: well appraised of the danger yet confident, certain that Skeelzanian fighting prowess, amplifying the Sornei stratagem, would sweep the Elven fleet from before them. As soon as the last had exited and the wood-paneled bulkhead swung shut, Gerulf poured himself another glass.

+ + + + + + +

Gerulf Van Cleef was in the Battle Bridge long before the fleet made its jump, pouring over the data coming in from the ESUS net. The Skeelzanians were still new at this sort of thing, much of the “information before the Admiral in fact being intelligent guesswork on the part of the analysts. Enough variables within the combined fleet were unknown to cause his luxuriant mustache to purse, but Gerulf had faith in this Sornei AI. It had proven itself to be a useful toy, in his opinion being the single reason why New Constantinople wasn’t anymore a slaughterhouse for the allies than it had been.

Looking down at the TacTable, Gerulf nodded as most of the icons abruptly disappeared. “The Sornei have made their jump. All ships go to general quarters, be prepared to jump on The Signal.

“Yes, Admiral. The flag captain looked at him askance, disapproving of the notion of an artificial construct having the honor to send a Sternmarine fleet into battle. Gerulf didn’t have time to worry about that. The varying speeds in FTL travel amongst the component fleets was enough to give him a headache as it was; he didn’t need to further drag out the Skeelzanian jump by having them rely on his own coordination. Let the DigiSent handle it.

Stepping back from the flurry of activity that enveloped the TacTable, Gerulf cycled his own personal communicator through the allied channels. There was quite a lot of pompous babble going across the airwaves, the Zerts and Telros pumping their respective fleets up for the slaughter. By contrast, Van Cleef had long dispensed with the habit, leaving it to individual captain’s discretion. The crews already knew enough of why they were fighting: the Keeblers were back, and if they weren’t stopped in the Alpha Quadrant then it was damned unlikely they would be stopped in the Gamma. “Flag Captain Hoch!

“Yes Admiral? The slightly paunchy looked up from a status report spitting out of one of the innumerous printers.

“Alert the Sskiss that we will be jumping on Kertai’s signal, immediately on its signal. I believe the dragons have similar FTL issues as we do, and it’d be poor showing on their part to arrive late.

“I’ll, ah, do so at once, Admiral.

A low thrrrum passed through the deck plating beneath their feet as the antimatter drives kicked in. All across the fleet new suns burst into existence as the Skeelzanians brought themselves up to combat speed. Stepping back up to the table, Van Cleef laid a hand on his lieutenant’s shoulder. “Getting in close, Hoch, getting in close and fast. They won’t be shooting at a planet that happens to have some ships in front of it, no. They’ll be gunning for us!

The men fell silent, the fleet continuing to accelerate, waiting for the signal. At last, it came. Beginning at the center with the Heavy Squadron, the Skeelzanian ships flashed out of reality in an explosion of tachyons, hurtling through hyperspace to arrive at Carvinia. The table went blank, reset, and filled with enemy contacts. “Scramble fighters, interdiction duties, Van Cleef spoke calmly.

In the hangers of the Migration ships, strikecraft were manhandled into their gauss rail catapults. They were older Uhu fighters, piloted by second-line pilots. The aces had been retained at Solomon, as SKZGHQ did not wish to waste them, or their new craft, against the Imperiatus nanite screen. The Grollsterns would have to wait for their combat debut. Nor did it truly wish to throw these pilots away. The Skeelzanian fighters would remain close to the fleet, intercepting the Imperiatus ordnance and avoiding the devouring robo-cells.

“Mister Teck, Van Cleef called loudly to his Gunner. “Give me some targets!

The Sskiss were overextended.

It was a simple fact that all hierarchs, whatever systems or worlds they ruled, whatever their expertise or sphere of influance knew. All knew regardless. The Sskiss, like a bloated hunter who had over gorged itself on a fresh kill had equally over-extended itself by claiming large numbers of starsystems that had been leased from the Balroggians. The Sskiss were simply stretched too far. Fleet strength, as well as numbers were inadaquate in the event of attack. And such an event, the Sskiss collectively knew they would have to pull back to their core systems and let the newer colonies fend for themselves.

The Sskiss however, in their usual cunning utilized false communication signals as well as equally false and convincing energy pulses on both slow moving and stationary drones in an attempt to mask this reality. A reality they could not afford to be known - not even to their allies....

As a result of this strategic predicament, mining, smelting and refinment operations were at full capacity as well as a massive ship construction program. What's more, the dangerous fuel the Sskiss used in the form of magnetic monopoles had to be mined and formed into rods or spheres for their newly constructed ships' gravity based STL propulation systems. Which in the end, only amounted to additional work....

.......................................

Having hastily cobbled together a semblence of a battlefleet as well as a command staff. Their were rumours that the Sskiss simply wished to choose their tactical position relative to the other fleets' positions. After some brief meetings between the Sskiss hierarchs, it was decided that three veteran commanders of the Tyrant/Ruler caste be sent to Riiss' Sslash, the Sskiss homesystem to receive their orders. These were; Ruuk' Khaw, overall commander of the entire Sskiss fleet and commander of the main FTL fleet, Paaak' Klawk, commander of the Stealth fleet and Gaar' Hrunt, commander of the STL system gunship fleet.

The Sskiss had arranged it so that the stealth fleet arrived with powered down shields, active sensors and weapons' systems and furthermore, were also attached to the main FTL fleet to better mask against any psionics or gravity signitures. No one within even their allies was to know about this tactical ploy, much less the enemy. The plan was to utilize this additional force at the most oppertunistic moment against the Imperiatus.

And if the Sskiss were good at anything - it was being oppertunistic. 125 million years as marauding pack hunters had taught them this crucial survival skill....

.......................................

In the depth of space, the telltale reddish vortex had heralded their appearence within the Carvinia starsystem. The redish glow swirled around the stargate briefly and then rapidly dissapated had revealed the presence of the Sskiss battlefleet.

Upon entering the system, commander Ruuk' Khaw carried out his first task. Clutched within one of his three long thick fingers, Commander Ruuk' Khaw placed a tiny data nodule within the top recepticle of the omni-data node.

"Activate/transmit silent farspeak" The Sskiss told the omni data node.

The Sskiss message was a simple one. As with all Sskiss messages, it required holographics. In this case the holographics depicted the supreme ruler of all Sskiss, Isss' Raak. And as with all such messages it was brief, to the point and telling. It had been transmitted directly to the Ils Sorne command ship which would in turn be given to Anikar, the supreme ruler of Ile Sorne.

"This hunters pack is at your disposal/command. Use it wisely! They have been commanded for sacrifice/death in service to the greater creche! May we all grow satiated on the flesh/blood of our enemies" May the greater creche last forever/never ending."

The message ended with the holographic image of Isss' Raak signaling "Eating of Victory".

Once the message was given, Commander Ruuk' Khaw sprang into action giving his first order.

"Deploy pods of confusion/pods of sensing" Snapped commander Ruuk' Khaw.

"Obey dictates/with servitude dominent one" The Sskiss pod master returned with modifiers of 'respect'.

From deep space over two hundred individual pods emerged from the dreadnaught and the three battleships within the fleet. First in four clusters, then each seemingly broke apart revealing either an individual ECM/ECCM drone or sensor probe drone. The drones immediatly dispersed, fanning out over the rest of the fleet.

It was only then, when the drones were fully activated that Ruuk' Khaw gave his next order...

"Release/deploy hidden hunters!" He said, signaling 'great cunning'.

The hidden stealth fleet, which had been attached to the main FTL fleet dropped off sinking toward the southern pole of the Carvinia system and away from the main Sskiss fleet. Ruuk' Khaw had faith in Paaak' Klawk's abilities to function independently as well as with the rest of the fleet as she was known to be experienced in such operations. These hunters would strike, swift and deadly at the most advantagous time during the engagment with the enemy.

The remainding Sskiss crew members, hearing this order all fell silent and signaled 'awe of cunning' for each present now knew why their commander released the drones first - especially the ECM/ECCM drones....

As a cover and just as importantly as an additional precaution to prevent the stealth fleets' detection from friend and foe alike.....

Admiral Corvaril stood alone, it seemed, in Carvinia. His embattled fleet watched as the far, far more massive Imperiatus fleet slowly drew in around his own. Though the Ilicanis station stood at his back, it was little comfort; the Imperiatus had many times over the strength needed to destroy the station.

"Sir," said his ensign. "Incoming message from the Imperiatus."

"Admiral Corvaril," an elven voice boomed. "You well know that we would prefer not to shed the blood of our own people during this reclamation, no matter how misguided they may be. We shall ask you one last time to surrender, land your ships, and power down the Ilicanis station's defenses."

"I'm afraid I won't," said Admiral Corvaril, non-plussed.

"Won't, or can't?" mused the voice coldly.

"Just won't," said the elf, bristling. "Today shall not pass with the last vestige of our civilization being swept away by the likes of you cowardly usurpers."

"So be it," said the voice icily. "Why you choose to stand, only at the end, is a mystery. It shall remain so, I'm afraid, because you will certainly not survive to explain it, traitor and thrall as you are."

The Imperiatus ships began to draw in, their weapons warming up. Corvaril nodded to the helm, and the fleet quickly drew into a defensive formation. The first beams of the Imperiatus slammed into the Thalassi, which groaned underneath his feet. Corvaril smiled, though inwardly it was a grimace; this could very well be the end, reinforcements or not. Maybe even especially because of the reinforcements.

The battle quickly began to head south. Despite the tactical playbook that had been compiled to assist against the Imperiatus, their numbers were too great for it to be effective. The RSF fell back into the protective ring of the fleet station, and in response the Imperiatus turned its fury against the ancient construct.

It was then that the coordinated jump that the Sornei fleet had arranged went through. The Sornei, Telrosian, Cerberusonian, Zerstorendari, Allanean, Skeelzanian, and Sskiss fleets burst into the system, hot within range of the Imperiatus flank. Immediately the Sornei fleet, under Kertai's coordination, opened concentrated fire on the largest vessel in the Imperiatus invasion fleet. In ancticipation of the battle against the Ilicanis station, its shields were majority-stem; the first salvo had not even finished firing before the stern shields had collapsed and the ship had erupted into a giant fireball.

The counter-attack was finally begun.

The Allanean fleet attacked in a triangular formation – or rather, shaped like a giant spearhead, with the Reckless Audacity at the tip of a tetrahendon flying towards the enemy. Slowly unwrapping from the Allanean ships were enormous formations of fighters, both manned and drone light craft, and so forth.

Electronic warfare vessels put out interference in every known spectrum, and thousands of tons of chaff and decoys were dropped. Where there were hundreds of targets for them to shoot at, the Imperiatus scanners were likely to perceive thousands of contacts.

In the meanwilhe, the Allanean ships began to fire. First was the Audacity, with it's planetkiller-grade cannon, then came the Porcupines with their hundreds of intermediate weapons and Wrath class warships with their heavy main batteries. From the other ships, tens of thousands of kinetic kill missiles were unleashed – but the amount of targets was much less than the amount of weapons. Only about two dozens of the enemy's ships were target of the entire Allanean fleet – and the distance was closing.

"All ships, assume wall formations. Beta protocols! And ready the main gun."

The replies of "yes, sir" following Aridan's order were followed over the following minutes by the destroyers forming a wall formation between the larger Cerberan ships and the Imperiatus fleet, with an opening directly in front of the Guidance as the Archer moved down to a position beneath the flagship. All this while the flashes of PPC fire were flying towards the enemy fleet.

Once the fleet formation stabilized, however, the barrage changed dramatically. Rather than mounting missiles like the older fleet had, these ships were mounting ion beam weapons that, though they are about as damaging against armor as any capital ship weapon, could rip through energy-based defenses such as shielding with frightening efficiency. Each of the destroyers mounted one of these weapons on a single large turret, while the Achilles-class mounted 6 on similarly formatted turrets, and the Guidance carried 8. Needless to say, the fleet's full barrage came up to a total of 76 beams, all being coordinated to fire at the biggest thing that the ships could find in the enemy fleet, and all designed to rip the shields off of whatever they hit.

"Status on main gun?" Aridan turned to his weapons officer, who responded.

"About 5 minutes to full charge."

"Alright, just to make it charge faster, dispatch orders to get all crew to switch to personal life support units if they haven't already done so, then shut down life support in as many areas as we can spare and put everything we've got into powering up that weapon."
This won't end well.

The battle began in short order, the Sornei and Imperiatus quickly engaging and hammering each other with their forward ships. Initial casualties were heavy, and Fendal expected that the battle would leave one fleet or the other crippled by the end of the engagement. Ordering his own ships to prepare to engage, he kept a close eye on the other Union forces engaging the enemy.

While the massive fleet of the Sornei was both giving and taking the brunt of the attack, the Allaneans unleashed an impressive amount of top-grade firepower. The Fleet Captain noticed that they also unleashed a massive force of fighters, and while the Oblivion detected massive amounts of signatures consistent with electronic warfare, he could not help but wonder how long the grossly outscaled fighters would last against the Imperiatus formations if they did not take cover from the predictable nanite screens soon to be unleashed. The Cerberans, on the other hand, fought with an impressive array of ion weaponry that was effective against the enemy shields, tearing anything they hit to pieces when fired en-masse. There was also some chatter about their “main gun, but that was something to see later.

Still waiting for the Skiss, Skeelzanian and Telrosian fleets to engage, Fendal signaled the attack. Fleet Command opened fire first, the ZVSG Oblivion, Apex and Darkhand unleashing a storm of beams, macro-shells and torpedoes in a focused assault that would no doubt have a serious effect of their target. Accompanying this barrage, the massive weapons systems of six more Superdestroyers loosed everything they had at two separate Imperiatus targets, the largest ships in closest proximity. With no superweapons equipped in their fleet, Fendal’s forces had begun a withering hail of fire that would not let up until they began taking casualties. With the defensive screen formed, it remained to be seen how easily the enemy retaliation would penetrate.

Activity was rather subdued on the Oblivion’s deck considering that they had just initiated the largest space battle any of them had ever seen. For now, things were under control.

The cusp of victory; that is what this battle was, starting out. New Constantinople was technically a loss for the Imperiatus, but as the resources, and more importantly, its symbolism as the heart of the Anikari, were cut out of the picture, it was as good as a victory. The prior passivity of Arenumberg was unexpected, but was rationalized as the natural reaction for an elven people who would submit to slavery at human hands. This last, perfunctory attempt at resistance was then a new surprise for the Imperiatus, but before the battle began their strategists rationalized that it was a political maneuver by the dieing state; to force this last remnant of their military to make a symbolic stand and appear loyal to Ilë Sornë. That it was all an elaborate trap was a possibility which only passed the lips of the perennially paranoid, and was a sentiment which Imperiatus commanders chuckled about and then filed away with the mental rubbish.

And yet, here they now were. There was no single term in English, and few in elven tongues, which could express the emotions the Imperiatus commanders were feeling now. There was rage, and amazement (not born of awe, but rather, the shock of impudence). It was the same kind of reaction a mercenary would have upon being assaulted by a small child, except in this case, the child is at least armed with a gun, and has gotten the jump on the professional. Underpinning it all, however, was a sense of uncertainty. Nothing in this war was turning out how they had expected, in the best and worst cases, and now, at the very end, it seems that all the well-laid plans were in danger of unraveling. Their hope lay in two factors - their technological might, and their numbers. Who could know if high command had pulled so many ships to this final battle out of pride, or because they had expected this last-ditch attack? It made little difference.

The back line of the Imperiatus fleet quickly turned to face the allied onset, and as the fleet re-routed their central C&C to another ship, after losing their task force flagship, it began to rearrange itself in the shape of a ring. Those forward continued to bombard the fleet station with renewed ferocity, while the backline met the attack of the allied fleet head on. With anticipation, they unleashed the fury of their beam batteries upon the allied fleet.

All to very little effect. Kertai was regulating shielding on the Sornei fleet himself, and the beams were absorbed. The attack plans distributed to the allied fleet, as well, had given them a step-by-step set of instructions on the proper regulation of shielding sytems, and various programs to run that would effectively mimic Kertai's own regulation processes without hijacking their own vessel's systems, processes which had been perfected by Kertai since New Constantinople. The smiles on the faces of many commanders died as the allied fleet withstood their blows.

Kertai transmitted a message to the allies: "Press the attack while they remain off-base! While we have come in great force, theirs remains greater, and if we do not decisively crush it here, their counterattack will certainly wipe out our fleet, and their reprisal will certainly see what remains of Ilë Sornë completely wiped out."

The barrage was working. Pictures were being taken by anyone in the Protectorate forces that could find time, catching images of a few enemy ships getting turned into debris fields by the concentrated ion cannon barrage. Perhaps more often, images were being gathered that showcased several ships being gutted as the Zerstorendarian barrage hit, or completely ripped in half as Allanean weapons made their impacts. Then came a moment of silence across the Protectorate portions of the allied fleet, or perhaps it was just awe, two brighter beams fired from the Guidance's forward section, the area that contained the "Main Gun".

On the ship's bridge, Aridan was staring intently at the TacHologram when the message was read by the weapons officer: "Main gun charged, firing coaxial ion beams.", noting the brighter-than-usual beams that had been partly to blame for the ship's name.

"Right!" He pointed at the hologram, singling out the largest ship he could find in the Imperiatus fleet. "Point us at that ship, or whichever one is closest to it by the time we turn the ship, and let loose! Make sure the IB barrage is hitting anything in that area, too."

It took a full two seconds to line the ship up for a shot. When it finally completed turning, the gun, a massive four and a half kilometer-long rail cannon, fired. The ship rocked as internal systems handled the majority of the weapon's recoil.

"Capacitor set 2 prepared, 30 seconds until next shot."
"Check the status of that ship, finish it off if its still alive, and fire at the closest thing to it if we managed to kill that son of a bitch. Fire when ready!"
This won't end well.

Re: All Will Know

The main body of the Sskiss fleet had split up into two seperate segments with the third segment, the stealth fleet having sinse departed to fulfill a seperate task. Both fleets assumed a roughly spherical formation. A formation ideal for defence. The FTL fleet seemed bathed in a halo from deep space due in part by just over three thousand fighters and at least four times that number in various drones within their immediate vicinity. But more likely, this due to the fact that the FTL fleet possessed virtually all of the Sskiss fleet's warhead capacity....

-------------------------------------------

From within the chamber of 'orders dictated/received', Ruuk' Khaw issued another critical tactical order having previously dispached all fighters and drones in a defensive formation around the fleet. He signaled 'anticipation of killing'....

Activate/Release pods of death!!!" Ruuk' Khaw screeched....

From the Sskiss FTL fleet and in particular, from the torpedo/missile cruisers and frigates a huge volley of death in the form of various torpedoes and missiles emerged seemingly blurring the Sskiss FTL fleet for a full minute or so. Whatever their payload, the warheads moved forward rapidly seeking out targets. They were timed in that the massive plasma warheads would strick first in an attempt to bring down, or at least weaken the ememies shielding. This was followed by various anti-matter warheads, MIRV'ed, scatter packs, as well as "lampray" type warheads and finally proton warheads for more accurate strikes. Furthermore, acompaning this massed warhead salvo were a few score ECM/ECCM drones. However, not all was what it seemed; For hidden amoung the massed number of warheads were stealthed energy leech mines steadily homing in on the Imperiatus fleet. This was a tactic ideal for sowing confusion for the enemy. As the warheads reached their targets, the fleet fired their own massed concentrated weaponary. The Dreadnaught command ship targeted a single enemy grouping along with support from the nine battleships acting as satellite ships. As in all Sskiss warships such fixed forward, spinal mounted weaponry were relatively few in number, but large in proportion to the vessels themselves and for the most part the ships itself was constructed around the weaponry itself. The Sskiss fleet from deep space blazed in an impressive colourful display of raw firepower.

Meanwhile, the system gunship fleet had fired a massed salvo ordered by commander Gaar'Hrunt. Gaar'Hrunt was experienced enough to wait till the warheads launched earlier had reached their targets and did their work. Commander Gaar' Hrunt choose to open fire on three seperate targets attacking from a flanking position from about 1/3 to 1/4 of a light second away depending on the optimal range of a specific weapon. The salvo composed a assortment of deadly weaponry; molecular disrupters, plasma cannons, assorted partical beams, anti-proton pulses and degenerate matter cannons tore into the enemy vessels. Gaar' Hrunt also hoped that the combined attack would force the enemy to change tactics or even better, break up the enemy fleet so that they can be annhilated piecemeal. To concentrate firepower, the smaller "Predators Vengence" gunships formed pairs around the much larger "Ruthless Slasher" class more than twice their size.

Note; I've decided to post the stealth fleet attack and the ground troop landing in a seperate post. The main reasons being a needed reaction from the Imperiatus fleet and putting to much action in one post. "Lamprey" warheads "latch" on to ships hulls and detonate soon after. They generate a powerful, albeit brief shield to concetrate said detonation directly to the enemy ships hull. Furthermore, Sskiss "Leech" mines drain energy. How effective the mines will be, I'll leave up to you.
